By John McCloud The decision by the Koll Co. to build a second phase of its Koll Alton Plaza industrial and office condominium project at Irvine Spectrum in Irvine, CA, underscores the continuing popularity of a trend that some observers expected to be short-lived. The Newport Beach, CA-based developer sold out the first phase of 27 industrial condo units in just a few months and will launch a larger second phase with 47 units.

Dole Food Heir Plans $1B North Carolina Biotech Campus
By John McCloud David Murdock, owner of Los Angeles-based real estate development company Castle & Cooke Inc. and Dole Food Co. Inc., has unveiled plans for a $1 billion biotechnology research campus in Kannapolis, NC, a city of 40,000 about 20 miles northeast of Charlotte. The 350-acre project, which incorporates the 250-acre former Pillowtex Corp. manufacturing plant, will include 1 million sf of biotechnology buildings along with 350,000 sf of retail, commercial, residential, educational and hospital space.
